AI Art Keywords List: 150+ Prompt Words for Light, Camera and Mood

The handiest way to use AI art keywords is by category: light, camera, composition, material, color and mood. Once your subject and setting are written, add one or two words from each category and the image goes from fine to atmospheric. Below are 150+ of the most useful, each with what it does.

How to use them: one formula

Placement matters more than quantity. A reliable order:

subject + setting + light + camera + composition + material + color + mood

The cover portrait used this prompt:

A young woman glancing back in a wheat field at golden sunset, her hair lit by backlight, film tones, cinematic portrait, color photo

Broken down: “young woman glancing back” is the subject, “wheat field” the setting, “golden sunset” and “backlight” the light, “film tones” and “color photo” the color, “cinematic” the mood. One sentence, one or two words per category. See it in full at Golden-Hour Wheat Field Portrait.

Writing subjects and settings is covered in our AI image prompt guide; this post is the word bank.

1. Lighting (28)

Light sets half the mood. When unsure, start with side light, backlight or golden hour.

Morning sunbeams cut through mist in a conifer forest, lighting a floor of moss and ferns

Prompt idea: a conifer forest in the early morning, sunlight piercing the mist in god rays, moss and ferns on the ground, calm and soothing, color photo.

God rays need something in the air — pair them with mist, fog or dust so the beams have something to light.

2. Camera and angle (27)

Shot size sets distance, angle sets viewpoint, lens sets the sense of space.

color photoPrevents black-and-white results

That last one earns its place. The photo type occasionally returns a moody black-and-white image; this prompt didn’t mention color, and the result came back monochrome:

A black-and-white still life: a ceramic coffee cup on an old wooden table by a rain-streaked window, steam curling up, raking light casting a shadow across the table

Prompt idea: a cozy ceramic coffee cup on a wooden table by a rainy window, morning light, steam rising — no color named, so it came out black and white.

If that mood is what you want, great. If not, add “color photo” or name specific colors. The full prompt is at Coffee by a Rainy Window.

A young woman in a hooded yellow raincoat stands in a wet Tokyo alley at night, red-and-white Japanese signs behind her and neon reflected in the puddles

Prompt idea: a young woman in a yellow raincoat in a Tokyo alley at night, neon signs reflecting in puddles, gentle rain, Cinematic preset.

Just “night,” “neon” and “gentle rain” plus the Cinematic preset give the whole mood.

Five rules to avoid trouble

  1. One or two per category. “Soft light, hard light, overhead light” forces the AI to pick one or blend them badly.
  2. Watch for contradictions. High-key with low-key, minimal with filled frame, warm with cool. If you want both temperatures, say “teal and orange.”
  3. Don’t stack styles. With a preset selected, use the words above freely but don’t name another art style. Our AI art styles guide explains the presets.
  4. Describe positively. There are no negative prompts; instead of “no people,” write “an empty street.”
  5. Skip empty quality tags. “Masterpiece, 8K, ultra-detailed” describes nothing; spend those words on keywords from this list.

To see these words in real prompts, pick an image you like in the prompt library and spot each category in its prompt. For wallpaper-specific color and light pairings, see our AI wallpaper guide.
